The antiseptic properties in LISTERINE^® come from four essentials oils – thymol, eucalyptol, methyl salicylate and menthol - which have been clinically proven to kill 99.9% of oral bacteria, prevent and reduce gingivitis, plaque film and bad breath. The alcohol in LISTERINE^® Antiseptic Mouthwash acts as a solubiliser for the active ingredients (the four essential oils) and is itself not an active ingredient. Listerine^® Antiseptic contains pure pharmaceutical-grade alcohol (ethanol), which is considered safe for use as an ingredient in daily-use mouth rinses. In fact, it’s contained in many commercially available mouth rinses.
